Pigeon Pea Leaves – A Seasonal Treasure from Our Farm
Our Pigeon Pea Leaves (Cajanus cajan) are naturally grown and carefully harvested right here on our farm. Known throughout Jamaica as gungo pea, this seasonal plant has long been valued for both its food and traditional herbal uses.
The peas produced by the tree are especially popular from December through February, when fresh gungo peas become a treasured ingredient in Jamaican kitchens. They are best known for making our traditional Rice and Gungo Peas, a favorite during Christmas and the New Year season.
While the peas are enjoyed as food, the leaves are the part we are offering as an herbal product.
Pigeon pea leaves have a long history of use in traditional herbal practices in several parts of the world. They have traditionally been prepared as herbal teas or decoctions for digestive complaints, fever, oral and gum care, and general wellness. Research has also identified naturally occurring plant compounds in the leaves, including flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, and other phytochemicals. Laboratory and preclinical research has investigated pigeon pea leaf extracts for potential antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and blood-sugar-supporting activities, although these uses should not be considered proven treatments for disease.
Because our pigeon pea is seasonally grown and harvested on our farm, availability of the leaves may be limited throughout the year. Enjoy a traditional Jamaican plant with a rich connection to our farm, our food, and generations of herbal knowledge.
Please note: We are selling the Pigeon Pea Leaves, not the peas. This product is offered as a traditional herbal product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
