Hymenaea courbaril, more commonly known as Jatoba or Stinking Toe, is a large tropical tree native to the Caribbean, Central, and South America. While its nickname comes from the strong-smelling fruit pods, the real treasure lies in its bark, long used in traditional medicine across indigenous and Afro-Caribbean cultures.

Medicinal Uses of Jatoba Bark

Jatoba bark has earned a reputation as a natural remedy with a wide range of health benefits. Traditionally, it’s been used as:

1. Antifungal and Antibacterial Support

Jatoba bark contains compounds that help fight off infections, especially fungal and bacterial. It’s often used to help treat candida, athlete’s foot, and internal infections.

2. Respiratory Support

The bark is known to ease symptoms related to bronchitis, asthma, and chronic coughs. It helps open airways and soothe irritation in the lungs.

3. Energy and Fatigue Fighter

Known in the Amazon as “the energy tree,” Jatoba is used as a natural tonic to combat chronic fatigue, low energy, and general weakness.

4. Anti-inflammatory

Its anti-inflammatory properties can help manage arthritis, muscle pain, and other inflammatory conditions.

5. Digestive Health

Jatoba bark has been traditionally used to support the digestive system, helping with parasites, indigestion, and gut imbalances.

How to Use Jatoba Bark

Jatoba bark is most often prepared as a decoction (strong tea) or tincture.

Decoction (Tea)

  1. Break up the bark into smaller pieces (about 1–2 tablespoons).

  2. Add to 3–4 cups of water in a pot.

  3. Bring to a boil, then lower to a simmer for 20–30 minutes.

  4. Strain and drink up to 2 cups daily, depending on your needs.

This method extracts the medicinal compounds slowly and thoroughly.

Tincture

You can also find or make Jatoba bark tinctures (alcohol-based extracts). These are concentrated and easy to dose:

  • Standard dose: 1–2 droppers full, 1–3 times a day in water or juice.

Precautions

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  • Always consult a health professional before starting any new herbal remedy—especially if you’re taking medications.
